John HudsonSep 201 min readA Reflection on Mental Health and Substance Abuse in the Trades and IndustryA few weeks back I came across the Blue Hat Memorial in Campbell River, BC— a powerful tribute to those we've lost to drugs over the past few years. Most of the lost are men and boys and many were in the trades and industry. This memorial stood as a stark reminder that behind every hard hat is a life, a story, and sometimes a struggle.Substance abuse and mental health issues continue to claim lives in the trades and industry, often in silence. The pressures of the job, the physical demands, and the high-risk environment can take a toll. Unfortunately, many are left to face these challenges without support, resulting in tragic losses. As I walked through this memorial, I couldn't help but reflect on the importance of addressing these issues head-on. Our companies need to provide not just for physical safety measures, but also mental health support, actively destigmatize seeking help, and work to reduce the prevalence of substance abuse.Let's remember that safety isn’t just about hard hats, harnesses and hazardous materials —it's about looking out for each other and promoting a culture of mental health awareness and support. We will be digging in here.
